Abstract
Words in any given time period typically possess several specific semantic components that are frequently overlooked in dictionaries. This research aims to identify and analyze the semantic components of the word 'Modārā' (مدارا) within the Bahramshahi Kalila wa Dimna (translated by Nasrullah Monshi), utilizing the method of componential analysis. After examining the lexical meanings in reputable dictionaries, the usage of 'Modārā' within various syntagmatic chains in the original text was meticulously analyzed, and its semantic components were extracted. The findings indicate that 'Modārā' in Kalila wa Dimna, extending beyond simple tolerance or kindness, is portrayed as a complex, purposeful, and multifaceted strategy for advancing objectives, managing interactions, and ensuring survival under diverse conditions. Specific semantic components, including [+Apparent Behavior], [+Kind], [+Instrumental], [+Expedient], [+Cunning], [+Flexible], and [-Sincere], are consistently repeated across the various applications of this word within the work. This analysis highlights the necessity of considering the semantic nuances of words in classical texts and reveals the limitations of dictionaries in fully representing these subtleties.
