Abstract
Grammar is a field of linguistic study concerned with examining, describing, and analyzing the rules governing language, thereby revealing its structural and functional properties. Despite grammar’s fundamental role in organizing the structure and tone of poetry, the category of quasi-sentences—as part of the broader set of linguistic constructions—has received minimal and scattered scholarly attention in previous research and reference works. Khaghani’s Divan, owing to the abundance and remarkable diversity of quasi-sentences, constitutes a rich corpus for the investigation of this phenomenon. Adopting a layered stylistic approach and focusing on three levels—lexical, rhetorical, and syntactic—this study analyzes selected poems from Khaghani’s Divan in terms of the placement, structure, and functions of quasi-sentences. Within this framework, the research explores the types and variations of syntactic structures; the strategic employment of quasi-sentences in pivotal positions within the couplet; rhetorical devices such as brevity, emphasis, and imagery; and the selection and combination of words in relation to the semantic and musical context of the verse. The findings elucidate the tripartite syntactic, rhetorical, and lexical functions of quasi-sentences in Khaghani’s poetry, clarifying their role in shaping his individual style and opening new horizons for more in-depth analysis of classical Persian texts.
