Abstract
Communication is achieved through both verbal and non-verbal means. In non-verbal communication, which has a broad scope and is significantly more influential than verbal communication, we encounter various manifestations of the use of body language. The present study, conducted in a library research and with a descriptive-analytical method, aimed to specifically identify and extract various elements of non-verbal communication in Khaghani's ghazaliyat and decipher the hidden messages and meanings that the poet intended to convey through body language, and to discover the type of the relationship between the two main characters of the ghazaliyat, the lover and the beloved. Based on the research findings, the scope of body language usage in Khaghani's ghazaliyat has been very extensive and diverse and the poet special attention, among the various aspects of body language, given respectively to eye expressions (with an emphasis on crying), non-verbal gestures (with an emphasis on sighing), and lip expressions (with an emphasis on laughing and kissing) and about 65% of the non-verbal communication between the lover and the beloved in ghazaliyat has been dedicated to these three areas. However, the use of combined movements and their impressive diversity (22 modes to convey 45 meanings), as well as various facial expressions and particular attention to the facial color, have been notable in Khaghani’s ghazaliyat. The results showed that the use of body language in Khaghani's ghazaliyat, in many instances, has signified the lover's distance from the beloved or the beloved’s refusal to engage in verbal communication with the lover.
